Pastor:
The Rev. Beth Cantrell

Christian Education

Fall 2007- Spring 2008

All Sunday School classes are located on the main hall of the upper level of Immanuel. They are very easy to find from all entrances of the church. Classes begin at 9:30 and conclude at 10:10.

Children’s Sunday School

Sept. 16- May 25

Young children are invited to the nursery to enjoy an age-appropriate lesson. Three teachers currently provide the children with Bible knowledge, tactile learning experiences, as well as craft projects to re-enforce the lessons.

After Sunday School, parents are welcomed to decide whether they want their child to go with them to worship or whether the child should stay with an adult in the nursery.

At Christmas and Valentine’s Day, the children of Immanuel make cards for Shut-Ins to know that they are remembered and loved. Involving even the youngest children of Immanuel in mission outreach is an important part of our expression of faith.

Youth Sunday School

Sept. 16- May 25

Youth of Immanuel (7th- 12th grades) gain a relationship with the pastor during Sunday School. When Rev. Beth Cantrell teaches, she focuses on Bible basics including learning the books of the Bible, how to look up scriptures, and how to find passages in the Bible. She also incorporates journaling as a way for the teenagers to incorporate faith into their lives.

Other teachers will assist Beth throughout the year. They will use a more traditional curriculum.

Confirmation

Immanuel currently has two children who are regular participants in the confirmation program. Throughout the year these children will experience growth in their knowledge of faith in a variety of ways. They pick a mentor and explore faith lessons with a lay member of the congregation. Along with the pastor’s guidance, they will participate in three local mission projects and one larger mission project next summer. In March, they will host a spaghetti fundraiser to earn some money for their trip to Atlanta, GA. In April, they will travel to the Martin Luther King, Junior Center to study King’s legacy to our great nation.

Parents interested in enrolling their children in confirmation should contact the Beth at the church office. 410. 744. 5014.

 Adult Sunday School

Paul: Architect of the Early Church

(Sept. 16-  Oct. 28)

Starting on Sunday, September 16, we resume our weekly Sunday School class at 9:30 in the Conference Room. (The conference room is located on the upper level, main hall, at the end of the hall on the right. It is labeled.)

Rev. Rebecca Steen leads Adult Sunday School. During the fall she will conduct a six week study on Paul and First Corinthians. Becky is an incredible asset to our congregation. She brings energy, vitality, education, and experience to Sunday School. No prior knowledge of the Bible is necessary to benefit from this study.

 C.S. Lewis: Witness of Faith

(Nov. 4- Dec. 16)

J.P. Desmond will conduct a study on the writings and fiction of C.S. Lewis. C.S. Lewis wrote the series The Chronicles of Narnia, which provide interesting allegories of faith. C.S. Lewis also wrote many Christian writings which speak overtly of faith. C.S. Lewis was Catholic. His Christian legacy still inspires and provokes contemporary readers.

J.P. Desmond is a laid-back guy with a whip smart intellect and wry wit. He is finishing his undergraduate work at Towson University. He is currently planning to go to law school next year. There will be some outside reading for this course, but it won’t be overwhelming. Non-readers will still benefit from the conversation generated in the class. Please join us. (The conference room is located on the upper level, main hall, at the end of the hall on the right. It is labeled.)

 Gospel According to Matthew

(March 30 - May 11)

J.P. Desmond will conduct a study on the book of Matthew.  We invite you to take this opportunity to explore with others the gospel.  All interpretations and views are welcome.  We can all gain from the insights of others as we discuss the context for the text and the issues of that time.
